Chennai Television tidbit

Monday, December 31st, 2007

1. The hot topic of discussion that is making rounds in the Tamil television industry is about the sudden switchover of Kana Kaanum Kalangal fame writer Brahma from Vijay TV to Sun TV as the director of their new mega soap Kalloori Kaalam. It is believed that Kalloori Kaalam has a similar storyline to Kanaa Kaalam Kalangal — the only difference being that KKK was set in a school backdrop, that deals with friendship, classroom pranks, teenage love and more, while KK is set in a college campus.
2. Kalaignar Tv is starting one more dance reality show directed by Master Kala. Attam Pattam a show with dancers of age 16-25 will compete to get the prize of Three lakhs.
3. Kushboo is in the news again. This time for walking out of the serial ‘Namma Kudumbam’ being shot by Kalaignar TV. The mega serial began along with the launch of the channel on September 15 and was hailed as a serial with an offbeat theme. Kushboo claims she decided to walk out because the serial was not shaping up the way she wanted it to and it was moving away completely from what they told her it would be.
Considering Kushboo is the protagonist of the show, this bit of news will be a setback to Kalaignar TV which was banking on her star value. She claims that she tried her best to put things in order but the place was in chaos. There were days when they would call her to shoot and nothing would happen on the sets. That was when she decided enough was enough and walked out.
4.Vetri vagai is a news game show in Mega TV , spread over three segments, which will test the participants’ skills in observation, memory and quick-wittedness. Screened every Saturday at 3.30 PM The winners will get attractive gifts such as mobile phones, books and gift vouchers. Hosted by Karthiga, this phone-in programme is directed by Arun Prasad.
5.Eight amazing kids got an early Christmas gift when they were selected for the Pogo Amazing Kids Awards 2007, which identifies and honours young talent. Chosen from all over the country, these kids are winners in diverse categories. The hosts of the evening, Aamir Khan and his little co-star Darsheel Safary, made the event an unforgettable experience. A great way to promote Taare… but who’s complaining?

Bhutto, Alqaeda and Musharraf - The world is in Danger

Friday, December 28th, 2007

Two months before her death, former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto sent an e-mail to her U.S. adviser and longtime friend, saying that if she were killed, Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf would bear some of the blame She cited his government’s denial of her request for additional security measures after the October suicide bombing that targeted her upon returning to Pakistan from exile.
Analysts say that President Musharraf is unlikely to have ordered her assassination, but that elements of the Army and intelligence service stood to lose money and power if she became prime minister. The ISI includes some Islamists who became radicalised while running the American-funded campaign against the Soviets in Afghanistan and were opposed to her on principle. Saudi Arabia is also thought to have frowned on Ms Bhutto as being too secular and Westernised and to have favoured Nawaz Sharif, another former Prime Minister.

The main suspects in the assassination are the foreign and Pakistani Islamist militants who saw Ms Bhutto as a Westernised heretic and an American stooge, and had repeatedly threatened to kill her.
But fingers will also be pointed at the Inter-Services Intelligence agency, (ISI) which has had close ties to the Islamists since the 1970s and has been used by successive Pakistani leaders to suppress political opposition.

America is now left with no alternative except to support and trust Musharraf. And Musharraf does not have his uniform with him. This is a very daisy situation and he may even argue that he was right earlier when he wanted elections deferred. “This latest tragedy is likely to reinforce beliefs that Pakistan is a dangerous, messy place and potentially very unstable and fragile and that they need to cling to Musharraf even more than they did in the past,” said Daniel Markey, who left the State Department this year and is now a senior fellow at the private Council on Foreign Relations.

Now even if elections are held, only Musharraf party [PML(Q)]will win because Nawaz is not contesting and PPP has no meaning with out Bhutto. So did AL QAEDA DO HIM A FAVOR? The repercussions of her murder will continue to unfold for months, even years. What is clear is that Pakistan’s political landscape will never be the same having lost one of its finest daughters
By announcing that they did it, Al Qaeda removes the suspicion on the establishment thus doing one more favor. There has been many instances when Alqaeda has made poor attempts on Musharraf’s life but each time it was for his advantage.

It is the need of the hour for all the responsible nations of the world to intervene in Pakistan and reduce the importance of ISI and army in civilian life. This is the only long term solution for a peaceful south Asia. Pakistan is a nuclear state and no one can afford to see its arsenal with the fanatics And they are very near it than ever before.

America should do a soul searching and should introspect on whether their anti terrorism ploys are working. There has been reports of funds being diverted which is OK for them for so long, but now every time and money should count or the bomb might start ticking.

Hussain Haqqani, a former top aide to Bhutto and now a professor at Boston University, thinks the U.S., which has counted Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf as a key ally against terrorism since 9/11, bears some of the responsibility. He blames Musharraf himself, above all, for Bhutto’s death. “It’s quite clear that Musharraf does not want an election — you can quote me — he is the one who has constantly wanted anybody who can threaten him or his power, out.”

Will there be a fair investigation on the assassination. Will the culprits be caught. The answers are obvious if previous instances are indicators. The region is famous for keeping the guessing machine live for ever, whenever such mammoth episodes happen. It is a sad day for the region and the politics all over the world is going to see changes, sooner or later. Such is the significance of her untimely death.

The televisions in India were having a ball in grief. All the English channels aired the clips of her recent Interviews and photos from archives. And discussions with Ambassadors and ex foreign Secretaries and ministers. They probably gave this more space than the Pakistan televisions. It might sound as a inhumane remark but I feel these channels have the ability, purpose and responsibility to control the grief and down play the tragedy. Otherwise are they not contributing to the aim of the perpetrators.

Amrinder aroosa d(aroused)-spelling mistake or a grave one?

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

What is news? And ‘what a news’? This is decided in the televisions of India by forecast of eyeballs and personal whims of the presenter. This approach is more evident in the English studios.
Amrinder Singh is sacrificing hours in assembly for hosting an ISI Spy-screams an elected MLA from Punjab in the assembly and the news we get in the televisions is’ can we intervene in the private life of a politician’.
Times now nine o clock news has always been my favorite. Arnab goswami ‘s operandi of picking the right headlines, bringing in all people concerned on the issue, asking leading questions and leaving the discussion open are his strengths. But his weakness is if he has an opinion, he normally intervenes the opposite view by talking in middle or snubbing or being plain provocative. In yesterday’s edition, while discussing the Amrinder’s issue, he talks to a BJP politician, a congress politician and a women activist. The former was more sensible in his remarks and said while any personal friendship is a private affair, a relation between two individuals belonging to rival countries and that too between those who have occupied high offices, has to be public. Discussing ‘whether politician’s private affairs can be private or not’ was to divert the issue. Arnob has taken a position that ‘it is their private life and till proven that she is a spy it is a non-issue’. So he cleverly brings in two voices in support and one against and he lets the support free minutes to speak while he keeps cutting short the opposite view. But to his bad luck the support was not impressive. They kept repeating the same argument and kept beating around the bush.

To make it seem it is intervention in the private life of a politician is equivalent to scuttling the issue and making an issue a non-issue. Sukhbir Singh Badal, President, Shiromani Akali Dal said:” Media reports speak of Alam’s link to ISI. Why is Amarinder patronizing her? Amarinder’s wife hasn’t called her a friend. We are not against their friendship. We want a reply to media reports. We want the Indian government to clear it’s stand.” – fair enough. Let them be friends or even more than that, but let government clear the suspicion. It is mandatory because it is between individual belonging to two not so friendly countries. Will the FBI or CIA keep quiet if one of their high-ranking politicians is in an affair with a Russian high profile journalist who is in close links with Russian army? Now this is the issue and not his private life.

CNN-IBN in its edition face the nation debated this yesterday and the sms polls gave a resounding 76% yes for the question should politician’s love life should be open to public scrutiny? . My answer to the question will be yes only if it is between foreigners or people with suspicious background, otherwise it should be private. The chief minister of Tamilnadu has two wives [and one more died] and world knows it. And it has never hampered his political image and it is no concern to any one as long as his wives do not mind. But this is not a similar issue.

Many Sikh books claim Guru Gobind singh had two wives and some say three wives [Mata Jeeto Ji, Mata Sundri and Mata Sahib Kaur] But some texts say they are the names of his only one wife. Sikhism follows monogamy and if Amrinder is having an affair it is his wife who has to bother. Important people in Indian history usually have/had more than one wife as a symbol of their being great and superior to the common man. And Kings were justified in the eyes of public to have more than one wife. Whether it is an issue or not is for their respective religion’s to ponder. But the country has to reaffirm that it is not against the interests of the nation. That they are responsible people and hence will not do it is not enough. This requires investigation by the intelligence agencies.

In the 1960s, the infamous Profumo Affair, the first to bring in a national security angle to an affair between two public persons, rocked UK. Christine Keeler was a former English model and showgirl whose relationship with a British government minister John Profumo left the Harold Macmillan in 1963 red in the face. Profumo had to resign after the scandal. Is it similar is what the nation needs to know.

This is not an issue which propped up yesterday. This was in news since March 2007. And now it is mews because the televisions are smelling eyeballs and more because it is raised in the assembly. The whistle blower- the news in THE TRIBUNE CHANDIGARH which reignited the NEWS is shown below.
Is it fair for the intelligence agencies to have kept quiet for so long?

Who is Aroosa Alam? she is the mother of popular Pakistani actor and singer Fakhar-e-Alam and daughter of notorious “General Rani” who was Yahya Khan’s mistress and later in jealousy house arrested by. J.A. Bhutto. Alam has two sons. Her elder son is a lawyer in London and her younger son is a rap musician and a popular television host in Pakistan. Singer Adnan Sami is her nephew.

Alam had earlier admitted that she was in India along with her elder son, a 33-year-old lawyer from London, when Punjab was going to the polls. Amarinder Singh became the target of allegations when he disappeared from the campaign scene for about a week to escort his friends from Pakistan to Ajmer.

The lady is believed to have done a course in military strategy last year at Pakistan’s National Defence College, which normally admits only senior officers — enough reason for many to smell a rat. She works for a paper who’s editor is a friend of the nuclear father of Pakistan.

Captain Amarinder Singh, then chief minister of Punjab, went to Pakistan in January, 2004. On that trip, Amarinder Singh went to Gurdwara Panja Sahib in Hasan Abdal; On the way, Amarinder Singh went to Islamabad, where he was entertained by Aroosa as chairperson of the local journalists’ association. She visited Patiala later in the year and was given some kind of a cup by Amarinder Singh at a reception in Patiala Club. Aroosa has a multiple-entry visa for India, thanks to her friends in the external affairs ministry, and makes frequent use of it.

Early in March, Daily Jinha, a newspaper in Pakistani Punjab, reported that Amarinder Singh and Aroosa Alam had got married. It was also rumoured that he had bought her a house in Islamabad for 70 million rupees (that is only Rs 5.3 million in Indian currency).

In an article ‘ Writing on the wall’ by V. Desai is the following excerpts about alam arosa: “Like her mother, Aroosa had a way with men; and having lived in Islamabad, she had come to know quite a few men of power. So in the Eighties she launched on a career: she would write up stories she had learnt from her friends in the government, mostly army generals, and splash them in newspapers. She started in The Muslim, and later on graduated to Pakistan Observer.

One of her most sensational stories related to Brigadier Andrew Durcan of Gordon Highlanders, nicknamed Tartan Barrel on account of his girth, who was military attaché in the British high commission in Islamabad till two years ago. She revealed, without naming any names, that he was intimate with a woman in the Institute of Strategic Studies, and that they had been meeting in Islamabad and England. She was not very explicit about who was spying on whom. But the director of the Institute issued vehement denials, which gave the story even more publicity, and the British government recalled Durcan for having had an improper relationship.”

Now do you think this as an issue or not?

Jeetega Gujarat -part-III[Jeetgaya Gujarat]

Monday, December 24th, 2007

The exit pollsters have been made to look funny. The wise men of the English TV and press are looking like jokers. Gujarat stumped everyone. This Gujarat will surely jeetega. Because for the first time a state has voted for development and has not been lured by free televisions and cheap rice. The channels are busy discussing whether it is victory for modi or BJP and the clever modi answered it is not a victory for me or for BJP but for the 5.5 crore people of Gujarat. Well said.

Congress played the communal card more than modi by speaking for a particular community. It also played the caste card by trying to use the dissidents to woo Patel’s and koli’s. It used free Televisions and cheap rice to lure tribals. It did succeed to a certain extent but with lots of eggs on its face.

The election commission did a double favor to Sonia Gandhi by their partisan judgement. Double because it released the judgement after the polling. If this was before, congress would not have crossed thirty. Modi’s speak of smell of colonial temperament would have fetched him thirty more seats. It is sad that bureaucrats, whatever big their position may be have to live with and do favors to the ruling central party. Justice need to seem to be done and the EC has failed in this.

Modi not only defeated congress, he made kesubai and other dissidents look smaller. He also look a sweet revenge on USA for denying him a visa. because of the huge margin of his victory, USA has to try harder for saving the nuclear deal.

I recollect the conversation of three wise men in NDTV- Pranab, Dorab and The express editor. They said they smell a change is in offing and how village after village , people were telling them Modi will be voted out. They also were prophesying that Their wisdom tells that people would not like arrogance and would like a politician to knell for votes. All this a day before the first phase of polling. It is time they refresh their wisdom and stop ‘managing results for elections’.

I also recollect a web chat with CNN-IBN’s National Bureau Chief Bhupendra Chaubey, when he was sure modi was on his way out and solanki was going to become the next chief minister. [Congress won in his constituency, borsad]We hope these wise men will stop such influencing results of elections in future.

BJP fielded no Muslims and 22 women. 15 women won. BJP won in 12 out of 13 SC seats. Congress had fielded 6 muslim candidates and Five won. [three in Ahmadabad]. No women congress candidate won. it had fielded ten women[one muslim].In 2002 BJP had fielded 36 women candidates and ten had won. BJP lost 39 seats to Congress and others but won 29 from congress. In Ahmadabad it had a nett loss of 4 and central Gujarat a nett loss of 20. It had a net gain in kutch by four, North by seven and south three. It had won 121,117,127 amd 117 seats in 1995,1998,2002 and 2007. The BJP’s margins of victory were on average 23,633 votes or about 18.3%. Compare that with the average margin of 10,652 for the Congress or roughly 10.2%. In fact, the Congress even won two seats by double digit margins, one by a mere 17 votes and another by 84 votes.

Modi is expected to be tough with dissidents. But will he with an eye for national politics show an olive branch to Muslim community or will he defer it as it might amount to minority appeasing?. Imagine what his rating and political height will be if appoints a Muslim as minister?

The next parts of jeetega Gujarat seem to be more interesting.
